Hi, sorry for replying a bit out of order. I hope the thread ordering
doesn't get too confused.

That's strange. I just tried the Cisco vpnclient-linux-4.0.4.B-k9 and it
connects nicely. Either the linux client supports firewall policies after
all, or the problem lies somewhere else.
