I've been starting vpnc with the following cmdline:

sudo ./vpnc --pid-file /var/run/vpnc.pid --script `pwd`/vpnc-kludgy-
script --kernel-ipsec /usr/local/etc/vpnc.conf

Then using a custom vpnc-script (my network at home overlaps the
network at work, so I have an overly complex set of routes that weave
the two 10.* networks together. Very ugly, but it works.)

Then I fiddle the dns settings from the network panel. It seems that
you cannot safely just edit the resolv.conf file under 10.4. I
haven't quite figured how to do this yet. (I've an idea, it involves
creating the correct key in configd, but I'm not quite sure what the
keys are.)
