vpnc was written to get open source support for cisco 3000 wlan access
concentraters. To my knowledge at this time vpnc was then only oss
client that would connect to those and similar VPNs. And vpnc works
well with preshared keys.

Now I hear people recommending kernel2.6/ipsec-tools over vpnc. Is it
a drop in replacement for vpnc plus hybrid auth and rekeying?

Can cisco profile, key files be easily translated for kernel ipsec?
